Description
Mysterious and captivating, Afanc is our aromatic Welsh white wine inspired by the legendary lake dwelling beast of Welsh folklore. Said to lurk beneath the pristine waters of mountain lakes, the Afanc would prey upon those foolish enough to fall in. Powerful yet elegant, this wine captures that same sense of depth and intrigue.
Crafted from a blend of aromatic white grape varieties grown across our two vineyard sites, Afanc brings together Solaris from The Dell with Phoenix, Reichensteiner and Schönburger from our older vineyard at Pen y Clawdd. This careful blending creates complexity, balance and vibrant cool climate freshness.
On the nose, expect lifted passion fruit aromatics with hints of wildflower and jasmine. The palate reveals flavours of elderflower, ripe pear and stone fruit, supported by bright acidity and a clean mineral finish. The result is a beautifully structured dry Welsh white wine with energy and precision.
A Standout Welsh Vintage
Our 2023 Afanc attracted national attention when it was selected as a highlight wine by Matthew Jukes at a London tasting event. Writing in MoneyWeek, he described it as:
“My headliner is a jaw droppingly beautiful wine named after a mythical beast who is said to slink in the depths of Welsh mountain lakes. It is made from Reichensteiner, Schönburger and Phoenix, and it reminds me of the classically dimensioned and uniquely beguiling rare French white style, Jurançon Sec. The stone fruit, wildflower, quince and jasmine tones are exhilarating, and the bitter bite of acidity and minerality on the finish brings the exuberant fruit to a dramatic conclusion.”
That vintage quickly sold out following his review. Production remains small and highly sought after, so early purchase is recommended.
